Marienkapelle

The Marienkapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel located at the Unterer Markt of the town of Würzburg, Bavaria.

History

  • The chapel was built in the Gothic style in the 14th century. Despite its large size, it is a chapel by status, as it does not have a parish. The chapel's history took a significant turn during World War II when it was heavily damaged by bombing and its interior was destroyed by flames.
  • In the post-war period, the chapel underwent reconstruction and was rebuilt in the 1950s. It was re-consecrated in 1962.

Architecture

The Marienkapelle is notable for its Gothic architecture. The architect responsible for its design is believed to be Balthasar Neumann, a renowned Baroque architect. Notable features of the chapel include its white exterior and conspicuous landmark status.
