The Gasthuiskerk

The Gasthuiskerk is a church located in the city of Doesburg, Netherlands, at Gasthuisstraat 41, 6981 CP Doesburg, Netherlands.

The current church building dates back to the 17th century, although there was a previous church on this site as early as the 12th century. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several renovations and expansions.

  1. The Gasthuiskerk is a stunning example of Dutch Baroque architecture, with a striking tower and ornate decorations.
  2. The church's interior features beautiful stained-glass windows, intricate carvings, and a majestic organ.
  3. The church is a Protestant church that hosts regular services and events for its congregation. Visitors are welcome to attend these services or take a guided tour of the church to learn more about its history and significance.

The church was built in the 14th century (circa 1380) on an elevation, which makes it higher than the Grote or Martinikerk. In times around the rampjaar, the church was used by the Reformed. Later, the church lay empty and had non-religious purposes, but in 1717 the Reformed returned temporarily because the roof of the Martinikerk had blown away.

From 1735, Lutherans took over the church and obtained ownership from 1790 onwards. Since 2000, Remonstrants have also been using the church.

  • The zaalkerk was built as a nave with a side aisle.
  • The side aisle was largely destroyed by State troops during the capture of the city in 1572.
  • Various proveniers' houses were built around the church.
  • A tower was built on the west side of the church, consisting of three stories and topped with an encased spire.

The ship is constructed from three bays, which are crowned with cross-rib vaults. The interior of the church is whitewashed. There is a cabinet organ from 1770 present in the church, as well as a one-manual organ by Naber behind the church, adorned with a swan, the symbol of the Lutherans.

The church was designated a national monument in 1966 and has been in use as a theater and cultural center since August 2014.
