The Catharinakerk
The Catharinakerk is a Protestant church located in Roden, Netherlands, built in the 14th century with an exact date of construction unknown. The church has a Gothic architectural style characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and slender columns.
As a Protestant church, its primary function is to serve as a place of worship for the local community and it is affiliated with the Protestant denomination.
- The church's belltower stands tall above the surrounding landscape and dates back to the 15th century, making it one of the most distinctive features of the church.
- The interior is characterized by stunning stained-glass windows, intricate stone carvings, and ornate wooden pulpits.
- The exterior walls feature a series of stepped gables, adding to the building's architectural charm.
The Catharinakerk was built in the 13th century and was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. In the early 15th century, the old choir was replaced by a Gothic choir, and then the tower was built at the end of the 15th century. During the restoration in the 1930s, the plasterwork on the inside of the church was removed, revealing the brick structure.
- According to Maria Catharina Hoppinck's testament from 1776, 10,000 carolus guilders were made available for the construction of an organ. The organ was built by Albertus Antoni Hinsz (1704-1785), a German organ builder, and the organ case was made by A. Smid.
- The story of the bequest is described on the shields and text boards in the church. The organ has 18 registers, divided over two keyboards (main work, secondary work) and a pedal.
The 18th-century herenbank in the church features the coat of arms of the landscape secretary Coenraad Wolter Ellents and his wife Gesina Oldenhuis, who resided at the neighboring estate Mensinge. The pulpit dates back to 1717. The baptismal font made of Bentheimer sandstone is from the 13th century.
