  • The church dates back to the 13th century and has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries.

Today, it remains an important cultural and spiritual landmark in the community.

  1. Despite its rich history and architectural significance, the Sint-Suitbertuskerk is not as well-known as some of the other notable churches in the Netherlands.
  2. However, it remains a beloved local institution that continues to play an important role in the lives of the people who worship there.

De Sint-Suitbertuskerk is a Roman Catholic church in the Dutch town of Stokkum.

The church was built between 1914 and 1915 by architects Jacobus van Gils and Johan van Dongen, and was consecrated to Saint Suitbertus.

  • Before the construction of the church, the Roman Catholics in Stokkum were initially dependent on the Sint-Martinuskerk in Emmerik and officially on the Pancratiuskerk in 's-Heerenberg from 1855.
  • In early 1914, permission was requested from the Archbishopric of Utrecht for the construction of a church in Stokkum. The permission followed quickly, as did the commission to prepare building designs.

The construction started in 1914 but was delayed by the outbreak of World War I.

  1. On May 18, 1915, two months after the planned date, the church was consecrated. The consecration took place on September 22, 1915, at the hands of Archbishop Henricus van de Wetering of Utrecht.

The church is set up as a neo-Gothic cross-shaped church.

  • The nave has a saddle roof, the transept has a wolf's back roof. On the crossing stands a small tower.
  • To the left of the church is the parsonage. To the right, next to the church, there is a path leading to the adjacent cemetery.

Since around 2024, the little church has had a social and cultural function.
