The Nicolaaskerk

The Nicolaaskerk is a church located in the city of Haren, Netherlands. The church was built in the 12th century as a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas.

Over time, it grew in size and became an important place of worship for the people of Haren. In the 15th century, the church was rebuilt and expanded with the addition of a tower.

The current building dates back to the 17th century, when it was renovated and extended again. The Nicolaaskerk is a striking example of Gothic architecture in the Netherlands.

  • A large rose window features on its façade.
  • The interior boasts a beautiful vaulted ceiling and intricate stone carvings.
  • A distinctive tower rises above the surrounding buildings, making it a prominent landmark in the city.

The Nicolaaskerk is one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands. Its bell tower is said to be one of the most beautiful in the country.

The church has been damaged by fires and other disasters throughout its history, but it has always been rebuilt and restored.

  1. In 1914, it was restored under the leadership of Rijksbouwmeester Cornelis Peters.
  2. At that time, the saddle roof was replaced with a high spire.

This would have been a tower chapel open to the nave of the church. The purpose of such a chapel on the floor above is unclear.

  • The church has several gentlemen's benches, one dating from 1616 and others made in the 18th century.
  • The pulpit was made in 1725 by Casper Struiwig.

The organ was built in 1770 by Albertus Antoni Hinsz; it was restored in 2002.

Just outside the entrance to the church stands the war monument of Haren.
