The Sint-Catharinakapel church
The church is located at Oud Lemiers 16, 6295 AT Lemiers, Netherlands, in the province of Limburg and country of the Netherlands. The church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
The church was built in a Romanesque style in the 12th century as a small chapel known as Castrans capella in Limiers. Around 1350, it was rededicated to the Holy Virgin and Martyr Catherine after a significant renovation of the original Romanesque chapel.
In 1497, the church fell under the parish of Vijlen. In 1648, Georg von Stücker commissioned the renewal of the choir. Later, his son-in-law Wilhelm von Frth oversaw an overall restoration of the church, with the year 1683 still visible on the third arch in the chapel.
About a century later, in 1785, the church was renovated and received a new floor, resulting in the disappearance of the 14th-century grave stone of Gertrud van Ophem near the Maria-altar. In 1879, the church was elevated to rectoraatskerk but was eventually rendered useless in 1896 when a new Sint-Catharina and Luciakerk was built in the town.
In 1896-1897, Pierre Cuypers restored the church, followed by further restoration work in 1921. In 1928, Willem Sprenger led another restoration effort. During this time, most of the inventory was transferred to the new church on Rijksstraatweg.
The church's walls were painted by Hans Truijen in 1978. The building is a national monument.
