Bethelkerk
Bethelkerk is a Dutch Reformed church located on Prins Hendriklaan in the heart of Den Helder. The church has a long history dating back to 1643 when it was built as a small wooden church.
- Over time, the church underwent several transformations, with major renovations taking place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The current building is a neo-Gothic structure designed by architect J.L. Groot in 1887. The church features a striking Gothic Revival style, characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and ornate stonework.
- The exterior façade is made of red brick with limestone trim, while the interior boasts a large wooden nave, an ornate pulpit, and beautiful stained-glass windows.
Bethelkerk means "House of Bethel" in Dutch, referencing the biblical town where Jacob had a vision. The church's tower stands at 54 meters (177 feet) tall, making it one of the tallest churches in the Netherlands.
- Inside the church, you'll find a beautiful organ built by the renowned Dutch organ builder, Albertus Anton Halmusi.
Bethelkerk is open for worship services and guided tours. Visitors are welcome to attend Sunday services or schedule a private tour through the Den Helder Tourist Information Office.
