History of the Nieuwe Kerk
- In 1649, De Nieuwe Kerk was built as a replacement for the dilapidated and cramped Gothic St. Ann Chapel.
- The church was designed by Jacob van Campen and features a strict, classical design.
- The tower (1613) was constructed in the decorative style of Dutch Renaissance by city builder Lieven de Key.
Van Campen's new design lent itself particularly well to a service where all attention did not go to the altar but to the pulpit. The pulpit was centrally located; from all corners of the church hall, the preacher was both visible and audible.
