Sint-Salvatorkapel
Sint-Salvatorkapel is located at Nijhoven 2, 5111 HE Baarle-Nassau, Netherlands.
- The church has a rich history dating back to the 8th century when there was already a wooden chapel with a burial ground.
- In the 10th century, a wooden hall church replaced it. This church was in turn replaced by a three-aisled wooden church in the 11th century.
The current stone church building dates back to the 14th century and is characterized as a Gothic-style cruciform church measuring 34 meters in length.
- In the 15th century, the residents of Baarle-Hertog were denied access to the streets of Baarle-Nassau, leading them to deny the residents of Baarle-Nassau access to their Sint-Remigius church.
- In response, the residents of Baarle-Nassau built their own church at Nijhoven.
In 1582, the church suffered significant damage in a major fire. On May 15, 1648, the Treaty of Mnster was signed, marking the beginning of the Dutch Reformed Church (later known as the Netherlands Reformed Church).
- On July 2, 1648, the Sint-Salvatorkapel was taken over by the state church of the Republic of the United Provinces of the Netherlands.
- The contents of the chapel were subsequently ravaged.
One statue was spared and was later placed in the Sint-Remigius church of Baarle-Hertog, where it remains to this day. At one point, a procession would march through Baarle, and this statue took its place.
- The church was then used by Protestants, but due to its size being too large for the handful of Protestants in Baarle, the hervormde church of Chaam became the local church.
- The Sint-Salvatorkapel fell into disrepair, with only the choir remaining. By 1807, the nave and transepts had been demolished, and by 1926, the rest of the church was torn down.
In 1930, a new Sint-Salvatorkapel rose from the remains of the old choir. The design is attributed to Dom Hans van der Laan.
- Surrounding the chapel is a prayer garden with a Lourdes grot, Calvarieberg, and Stations of the Cross, as well as 15 wooden chapels featuring the mysteries of the rosary and seven more dedicated to the sorrows of Mary.
Since 1996, this chapel has been recognized as a municipal monument, making it the first building in Baarle-Nassau to receive this designation.
