Sint-Joostkapel

Ginnekenstraat 23, 4811 JD Breda, Netherlands

Sint-Joostkapel

Sint-Joostkapel is located in the city of Breda, Netherlands, situated on Ginnekenstraat, a street in the heart of Breda's old town.

The church was built around 1436 and is dedicated to Saint Joseph. It is known for its unique architecture and stunning stained-glass windows.

  1. The Sint-Joostkapel is the oldest chapel in Breda and was originally outside the city walls.
  2. Before this chapel was built, a larger wooden chapel with a cross-aisle and choir stood on this site, founded around 1300 by Raso II van Gaveren, Lord of Breda.

In 1637, the chapel was closed by the Protestant magistrate. The building then served as a warehouse, stable, and military prison. The tower was renewed in 1662.

In the early 19th century, the chapel was converted into a dwelling, which it remained until 1945.

Although the chapel is dedicated to Our Lady since 1947, it is still commonly known as Sint-Joostkapel.

  • The chapel is open to the public and many passersby visit to light a candle or admire its beauty.
  • The Marian image, altar, and two prophet heads under the ceiling construction were created by Niel Steenbergen.
  • The gold-plated silver crowns of Mary and child were made by Nico Witteman.

The two mosaic tablets on the side walls to the left and right of the altar are the work of Marius de Leeuw. The left panel depicts the angel's message to Mary, while the right panel represents the Mother of Sorrows.

  • The six beautiful stained-glass windows show the struggle between Mary and Satan, Bishop Hopmans' promise to establish a devotional chapel, the protection of Breda by Mary, the liberation of the city by the Poles, the gift of the chapel by the city council, and the gratitude of the citizens to Mary as patron saint of the city.
  • The windows were designed by Gisèle van Waterschoot van der Gracht.

Visitors can attend Mass or other religious services at Sint-Joostkapel, which remains an active place of worship today. The church also serves as a cultural hub, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and other events throughout the year.

Overall, Sint-Joostkapel is a beautiful and historic church that is worth visiting for anyone interested in architecture, history, or culture.
