The Hervormde Kerk

The "Hervormde kerk" is a Protestant church located in the town of Oudendijk, North Holland, Netherlands. The full address of the church is: Dorpsweg 24, 1631 DE Oudendijk, Netherlands.

The Hervormde kerk (Reformed Church) in Oudendijk dates back to the 13th century. The original church was built around 1250, but it has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries.

In the 17th century, the church became a center for the Reformed Protestant movement, which emphasized the importance of personal faith and individual interpretation of Scripture. This led to the development of a strong Calvinist tradition in the Netherlands, with the Hervormde kerk in Oudendijk being one of its key institutions.

Today, the church continues to serve as an important place of worship and community for the people of Oudendijk and surrounding areas. It is also a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful architecture and rich history.

Some interesting facts about the Hervormde kerk:

  • The church's tower dates back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest parts of the building.
  • The interior of the church features several notable artworks, including paintings by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Steen.
  • The church has a strong musical tradition, with regular concerts and performances featuring local musicians.
  • The Hervormde kerk is open to visitors during certain hours of the day, allowing people to explore its beautiful architecture and learn about its history.

This old church had suffered great damage in the second half of the 16th century. The floor in the nave of the church consists of old gravestones. The tower is clad with wooden shingles.

Since 1971, both the church and the tower are registered as a national monument.

The SOHK (Foundation for Old Holland Churches) received the church in 1982 and started a restoration from 1987 to 1989. During this restoration, the tower and roof were restored, and the foundation was inspected.

The church is used once a month by the Dutch Reformed Church. Besides that, it is used as a cultural center.
