The Oude Kerk
The Oude Kerk is a beautiful church located in the city of Gouda, Netherlands. It was built in the 14th century and was originally a Roman Catholic church, but it has been used by various denominations over the centuries. Today, it is still an active church and a popular tourist attraction.
The Oude Kerk is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which is reflected in its impressive stone statue of the saint. The church's Gothic architecture was influenced by the prevailing architectural style in Europe during the 14th century.
After years of neglect and damage, the Oude Kerk underwent a major restoration project in the early 20th century to preserve its original beauty. The church is famous for its beautiful pipe organ, which hosts concerts throughout the year.
History
- The Oude Kerk was originally a Romanesque zaalkerk without a tower.
- A tower and choir were added in Romanesque style about 150 years later.
- In the 15th century, the ship was raised. The Romanesque gradually made way for the Gothic. This also applies to the tower spire.
Restoration
- In the early 20th century, a major restoration project took place to preserve the church's original beauty.
- In 1970-1973, under the architecture of ir. T. van Hoogevest, it was decided to break down both additions from the 19th and 20th centuries and restore the original layout.
The interior includes a sandstone baptismal font from the 12th century and a Bätz organ from 1816, which stood until 1973 in the Kleine or Sint Jacobskerk in Brielle.
The church is used by the Hervormde Gemeente Ermelo (PKN).
