Sint-Martinuskerk
Sint-Martinuskerk is a church located in Etten, Netherlands at Dorpsstraat 17, 7075 AC Etten, Netherlands.
The Sint-Martinuskerk church is situated on Dorpsstraat, which is a main road that runs through the town of Etten.
- The church was built in the years 1923-1924 according to the design of Joseph Cuypers.
- Before the Reformation, Catholics worshipped in the current Hervormde kerk. After the Reformation, Catholics were exiled from the churches in Germany or Huis Bergh.
- In 1820 a Catholic church was built again in Etten, a waterstaatskerk, according to the design of M.H. Conrad.
- In 1923 permission was given from the diocese for the construction of a new church.
In January 1924 the bidding process took place, and that same year the church was built. The church was consecrated by the dean of Terborg in December 1924. Two years later the waterstaatskerk was demolished.
The church has a floor plan of a Latin cross. On the street side stands a four-sided stone bell tower with a saddle roof. The saddle roof also returns in the design of the nave. In the façade is an entrance portal with an archivolt incorporated, above which is a statue of Martinus van Tours, the patron saint of the church.
- The side aisles of the church contain top gables in the middle of the triforia, with the transept next to it. The top gables are provided with pointed-arch windows.
- Above the portal are three pointed-arch windows on the façade.
- Between the church and rectory sits a small hall, featuring glass-lattic windows made by Willem Mengelberg.
The presbytery has a 5/8 chancel closure, executed with pillars and lancet windows. The interior is richly decorated. Murals have been applied by Wijnand Geraedts. The nave has barrel vaults, where the transept and chapels have rib vaults. The vaults are mainly colorful.
The choir then has a brickstone groin vault, and at the apse there is an arch vault applied.
De kerk is in 1999 designated as a national monument.
