About The Grote Kerk

De Grote Kerk te Harderwijk is a cruciform basilica in Gothic style dating partly from the 14th and 15th centuries.

The original church was larger and was initially known as the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, dedicated to Mary.

  1. Since the Reformation in 1578, when Catholicism was prohibited and suppressed, the church has been used for Protestant worship.

A large part of the church was lost when the tower collapsed in 1797 and part of the nave was destroyed.

The remaining part of the nave was then closed off under the leadership of Teunis Wittenberg, architect of the Quarter of Zutphen, by a new façade in sober Louis XVI style.

Location

The Grote Kerk stands on the Church Square, near the boulevard.
