The Sint-Clemenskerk

The Sint-Clemenskerk is located in Steenwijk, Netherlands, and its full address is Molenstraat 23, 8331 HP Steenwijk, Netherlands. This beautiful church is an example of Gothic architecture and has been a significant landmark in the region for centuries, dedicated to Saint Clemens also known as Saint Clement. It is believed that the church was built in the 14th century.

The Sint-Clemenskerk features a striking tower that rises above the surrounding buildings, giving it a prominent presence in the town's skyline. The interior of the church is equally impressive, with intricate stone carvings, stained glass windows, and a beautifully crafted altar. Throughout its history, the Sint-Clemenskerk has been an important center for worship and community gatherings in Steenwijk.

Originally, there was a wooden church building on the site around 900 AD, followed by several Romanesque stone and brick buildings. The church underwent numerous expansions. In 1409, the choir was built, with gravestones still present in the floor. During the Beeldenstorm period, a significant portion of the church's decorations were destroyed.

• The Sint-Clemenskerk has undergone restoration periods. From 1974 to 1981, the church underwent major restoration work. The vaulted ceiling paintings were also reinstated during this time, with the oldest dating back to 1633. Additionally, several foundation discoveries were made, including one from around 1200 AD.
• The organ, built by Petrus van Oeckelen from Haren in 1860, is another notable feature of the church.
