Sint Willibrorduskerk
Sint Willibrorduskerk is located at Spalstraat 38, 7255 AD Hengelo, Netherlands. This church is a Roman Catholic church situated in the Gelderse town of Hengelo. The church was built between 1842 and 1843 according to the design of H. Bauer, who worked for Rijkswaterstaat at the time. As a result, the church is also known as a waterstaatskerk.
The land on which the church stands was made available by Wilhelmina Henrica Christiaens, who had purchased the plot and specified its future use in her will before her death. After the church's consecration in 1843 and the establishment of Saint Willibrord as the patron saint, the church remained part of the Heilige Johannes den Dooper-parochie until 1862, when it served as a subsidiary to the main church, Johannes de Doperkerk, located in Keijenborg.
The Sint Willibrorduskerk was built in the style of a pseudobasiliek. In 1883, the church tower collapsed due to a storm, and a new spire was subsequently constructed. A major restoration project took place in 1924, during which stained glass windows were installed, plastered ceilings replaced with stone vaults, and a sandstone relief added to the front facade.
Today, the Sint Willibrorduskerk is recognized as a national monument, or rijksmonument.
