The Andreaskerk (St. Andrew's Church)

The Andreaskerk was built between 1485 and 1497 by the city's guilds as a symbol of their prosperity and power.

During the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, the church underwent significant renovations, including the addition of a new tower and the installation of a pipe organ.

  • The church is an example of Late Gothic architecture, characterized by its pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and intricate stone carvings.
  • The church's facade features a large rose window, while the interior boasts a beautifully preserved 17th-century organ and a stunning wooden ceiling.

The church's tympanum is adorned with carved figures of St. Andrew and other saints. The large rose window on the facade is one of the most striking features of the church, showcasing intricate stone carvings and a beautiful stained-glass design.

  1. The 17th-century pipe organ in the church is considered one of the finest examples of its kind in the Netherlands.
  2. The church has undergone several restoration projects over the years to preserve its original beauty and ensure its continued use as a sacred space.

The Andreaskerk is an active place of worship and is open to visitors for guided tours and concerts. It's also a popular cultural institution, hosting various events and exhibitions throughout the year.

History

The name of the church is derived from Andreas Nesscher, the first predikant of this gemeente in 1604. The Lutherse Gemeente is one of the oldest churches of Rotterdam. Although the community is established in the city, it is a regional community that encompasses the entire Rijnmond area.

The community used the then-Victoriabioscoop at Bergweg for eight years after the bombardment.
