Moskee Othman

Moskee Othman is a mosque located in the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was established by a group of Muslim immigrants from Turkey and Morocco who settled in the area in the early 20th century.

The mosque was founded in 1953 by Osman Othman, a Turkish immigrant who had come to the Netherlands in the 1920s to work as a merchant. Othman was a devout Muslim and saw a need for a place of worship where Muslims in the area could gather to pray and socialize.

The mosque grew in popularity over time as more Muslim immigrants settled in Rotterdam. Today, Moskee Othman is one of the largest and most well-known mosques in the Netherlands, attracting worshipers from all over the country.

  • Regular prayer services are offered at the mosque.
  • Classes for children and adults on Islam and Arabic are also provided.
  1. In the 1970s and 1980s, the mosque was threatened by plans to build a highway that would have cut through the area where it stood.
  2. After a long campaign led by the mosque's leaders and local residents, the plan was scrapped in favor of building a tunnel underneath the area.

In recent years, Moskee Othman has also been involved in efforts to promote interfaith dialogue and understanding between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Rotterdam. The mosque has hosted events and services with other faith communities, including ecumenical prayers and cultural festivals.

Today, Moskee Othman is a beloved institution in the heart of Rotterdam's diverse community. Its beautiful architecture and rich history make it a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.
