  • It was one of the three main churches in medieval Amsterdam, along with the Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church).
  • Over the centuries, the church has undergone several restorations and renovations.

The Westerkerk is a Gothic-style church with a striking tower that stands 72 meters (236 feet) tall. The church's façade features a beautiful stone decoration, including gargoyles and intricate carvings.

  1. The interior of the church is just as impressive, with a vaulted ceiling, ornate stained-glass windows, and a stunning wooden choir.
  2. As one of Amsterdam's oldest churches, the Westerkerk has played an important role in the city's history. It was used for various purposes, including weddings, burials, and even as a refuge during times of war.

The Westerkerk's tower has become a symbol of Amsterdam, appearing on many city maps and souvenirs. The church's bell tower contains 24 bells, which can be heard from afar.

The church's interior features a beautiful organ, built in the 17th century.

The Other Westerkerk

In addition, there is another Westerkerk located in Aalten, Netherlands. This church was built in 1891, several years after the doleantie in 1886.

  • The architect, H. van der Brand, made the church a schuurkerk. Later, a portaal was added to the street side due to space constraints.

The church has neoclassicist architecture and features various round-arched windows in its façade. The building is topped with a small tower spire.

The Westerkerk in Aalten has been designated as a municipal monument.

Today, the church is used by the Euregio Christengemeente Aalten-Bocholt.
