The Nieuwe Kerk (New Church)

The Nieuwe Kerk is a historic church located in the heart of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The church was built between 1645 and 1656 as a replacement for an earlier church that stood on the same site.

The church's architecture is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with a striking tower that rises above the surrounding buildings. It has strong royal connections. It was here that Prince William of Orange (later King William I) was buried in 1584, and it also served as the burial site for several other Dutch monarchs.

Within the church is the St. Nicholas' Chapel, which contains a beautiful wooden statue of the saint. This chapel has been restored to its original glory after years of neglect. The church's interior features intricate stone carvings, ornate furnishings, and stunning stained-glass windows.

Visitors can take guided tours of the church, which provide insight into its rich history and architectural significance. In summary, the Nieuwe Kerk is a historic church in Amsterdam with royal connections, a unique blend of architectural styles, and an ornate interior. It's definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in Dutch history and culture!

The other Nieuwe Kerk is located in Utrecht, Netherlands. It was the first church in Utrecht specifically built as a Hervormde kerk (Reformed Church), hence the name "Nieuwe" kerk.

  • The Nieuwe Kerk in Utrecht was built in 1910 and designed by architect Christiaan Posthumus Meyjes sr.
  • The first preacher of the church was from 1910 to 1916 Reverend J.R. Slotemaker de Bruïne, who was also a professor of theology at the University of Utrecht.

Slotemaker de Bruïne would later gain fame as a member of the Second and First Chamber for the CHU and as a minister in the cabinets De Geer I and Colijn II.

  1. The church is located on Bollenhofsestraat 138A in the Wittevrouwen neighborhood.
  2. Next to the Nieuwe Kerk stands one side the house of the church warden and on the other side a gate behind which a residential building called De Klopper was situated (where youth activities were organized in the 1950s and 1960s).
  3. Sundays, there was Sunday school upstairs from the church next door.
