  • This beautiful basilica has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when it was first built as a small church. Over time, the church underwent several renovations and expansions, resulting in its current form.
  • The Sint-Willibrordusbasiliek is known for its stunning stained-glass windows, impressive organ, and beautiful architecture.

The basilica serves as an important place of worship for the Catholic community in Hulst and is also a popular tourist destination due to its beauty and historical significance.

  1. The church is dedicated to Saint Willibrord, who was a Christian missionary and bishop who played an important role in the conversion of the Frisian people to Christianity.
  2. In 2009, the Sint-Willibrordusbasiliek was chosen as the most beautiful church in the Netherlands by the NCRV-radioprogramma Plaza.

The church features a painting called "The Merciful Samaritan" by Jan Baptist Maes (1794-1856), a Flemish artist. The scenes from the Stations of the Cross were painted by Jan Jozef Deloose (1769-1849) from Sint-Niklaas. The frames are the work of Gentse beeldhouwer P. Pauwels.

The church organ was built between 1610 and 1612 by Louis Isoré from Sint-Omaars, making it the only remaining organ in the Netherlands predating 1645. The firm Flentrop from Zaandam restored and expanded the organ between 1970-71.
