  1. Today, the Johanneskerk is still an active place of worship and is open to visitors who want to explore its rich history and architecture.
  2. It is a popular tourist destination and a must-see for anyone interested in Dutch culture and history.

De Nieuwe Kerk (of Sint-Nicolaaskerk) is a church that forms part of the former abbey of Middelburg in the city center of the Zeeland capital Middelburg. Next to the church lies the tower Lange Jan and the Choir Church.

The Nieuwe kerk was in use by the parishioners, the Koorkerk by the monks. Originally, it was a 14th-century church, but after a fire in 1568 (which also destroyed the roof of the Choir Church) it received its current form: a simple two-aisled hall church with high pointed arch windows and unadorned pillars.

The west façade consists of two pointed gables separated by an octagonal bell tower. In the 19th century, it still got a neo-Gothic west façade, new vaults and capitals, but those were removed during the restoration in 1900. On May 17, 1940, the church was almost completely destroyed due to wartime damage, but was restored afterwards during the reconstruction.

The interior has been adapted from 1997 to 2001 for multifunctional use. The fixed pews with the 19th-century pulpit have been replaced by loose blue chairs and a natural stone lowered altar. The design is by architect Johan de Koning. The 17th-century organ by Johannes Duyschot comes from the Old Lutheran Church in Amsterdam. It was extensively restored in 2008.

Between the two churches lies the tower Lange Jan and the Wandelkerk, the central choir where the 17th-century sepulcher for admirals Johan and Cornelis Evertsen by renowned sculptor Rombout Verhulst is located. Both brothers died in 1666.
