The Sint-Gertrudiskerk

The church called Sint-Gertrudiskerk is located at Dorpsstraat 1 in Ossendrecht, Netherlands. This parish church has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages when Ossendrecht had a chapel situated on top of the steep Brabantse Wal ridge.

From 1648 to 1796, the church was under Protestant control before returning to Catholic hands. The church's services were then taken care of by the parish of Hoogerheide from 1801 onwards. In around 1810, the Reformed Church received their own church.

Ossendrecht finally became an independent parish in its own right, splitting away from Hoogerheide in 1842.

• A new, neo-Gothic Sint-Gertrudiskerk was built in 1897 to replace the old church building.
• The architect responsible for this design was Petrus Johannes van Genk. This three-aisled cruciform basilica features a west tower and a quadripartite tower at the crossing.
• In 1937, a new pastorie was constructed at Dorpsstraat 7.
• In response to liturgical reforms in 1965, the church's interior underwent a complete renewal.
• In 2010, a restoration of the church building took place.

The parish church also has an interesting history when it comes to relics and veneration of saints. In 1844, the newly established parish received a relic of Saint Apolonia. Although this led to a relatively modest form of worship for the saint around that time, this practice ceased sometime around 1955.

The Sint-Gertrudiskerk is a significant cultural landmark in Ossendrecht and continues to serve as an important place of worship and community gathering.
