- The current church was built circa 1881 and expanded from 1897-1905. The site had previously been occupied by a Jewish synagogue in the fourth and fifth centuries under the Byzantine Empire, and tombs dating back to that period have also been discovered on the premises.
- In 1901, the facade of the current church was built, and Bishop Angelo Roncalli consecrated the altar on September 30, 1906.
